but these two are the last you'll see for a while, because the
painting went to its new home today. In fact it wouldn't
fit in my client's car, so we dropped it off before supper.
Both the mother and daughter were happy with the painting --
which I call a double success, and in fact we drank a small
champagne toast to the painting, and it was all very cheery
and good.
You will notice some changes since last night -- principally
the leaves. My client wanted some greenery so
I put them in. Their favorite place in their house is a
sun room overlooking a huge tree, plus they live near the
biggest park in Toronto, so it all made sense. The little
photo on the left side is a picture of the mother and daughter
when the little girl was two and eating her first candy.

will be well loved. Oh the title for today? I kept retouching
and changing it right until we took it over. In fact you
can see some differences between the bright coat image,
and the image without the light -- I changed it, which
is why the less bright one is the first one you see -- that's
how it looks without a light on -- now.

Barbara, this is lovely!! Congratulations! I immediately noticed the leaves in the background, thinking what a good idea that was! I find, the picture has suddenly gained more depth and the green is a perfect compliment to the other colours. Super!

The mother wanted to acknowledge that her daughter is growing up, and will leave home to make her own life, but with the painting she'll always have a touchstone of their love for one another.

ReplyDeleteYou are sweet. I'm glad you like it. I am actually quite proud of it, which is something you know feels wonderful, because we're usually so apologetic. The nice thing about in studio paintings, is that you get time with the sitters to really get a strong feeling for them, and that adds to the meaning that jumps out of the brush.

ReplyDeleteThanks so much. It's touching when people ask to include things that have great meaning to them. The woman's necklace is a replica in gold of the dog tags of a favorite dog. So the painting is thick with meaning -- and that is just wonderful.

Hi Barbara, I wanted to scroll back to this painting because it has stuck in my mind ever since I saw your series of posts about it back in June. I think this is really a wonderful painting - one of my favourites of your's. I love the idea of the gold leaf and can imagine it must be spectacular in person.
