Half way through Easter

We're doing Easter a bit differently this year
because Sam goes back to university tomorrow.
Both of our sons, and my son's fiancée love the
hunt for chocolate. Of course they're fast
because they're all grown up, but they are as
excited about chocolate eggs as small children.
My mother was surprised that we carry this
tradition on, but that is our tradition -- a big
turkey dinner together, and the hunt for eggs.
We just finished the big turkey dinner, completely
prepared by my sweetheart Steven.

So the older "children" are sleeping over
tonight to make sure they are part of the hunt,
because Sam has to go back to school early.
Like many of my students he can't believe
that there's school on Easter Monday. But
there is. As I pointed out to my class, many
people in the class don't celebrate Easter at
all. Reality check.

The studio ready for Easter

Sam is doing a degree in acting, so tonight
he offered to pose for me for a few minutes
in exchange for some time to run his lines.
I listened to his Shakespeare monologue, and
read the part of a corrupt cop in another
piece he's rehearsing, and got to do this sketch in
return. It was fun, and reminded me of the
days when he lived at home all the time.

Have a Happy Easter, or whatever you celebrate.

  3. Very nice drawing of Sam! And, the painting over the table is fabulous, of course.

I'm so glad you and your dear family have the dinner ritual together. I think we humans really need some ritual in our lives--draws us together, yes?

Hearing that your Sam is working on Shakespeare reminds me of one Shakespeare play that my Ell was in a few years ago. Here is the group who wrote and first produced it: The Reduced Shakespeare Company Presents the Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged

It is hilarious, but maybe Sam shouldn't see this video until after his performance...

Thinking of you and wishing you a productive and healthy week.

  4. I love that you negotiated a moment for yourself to draw your son. A picture drawn of a loved one is a chance to really study and 'see' them anew. It's a special gift you gave yourself.

I really admire your marker work -- it shows courageousness and confidence. And that big diptych on your wall(!).

  7. Hi Sally,

Happy Easter to you. I'm glad you like the sketch of Sam, he is a great kid. I hope you have a great holiday too. I work on Monday, so it's now over, but it was very nice.

    Take care,
    Barbara

  9. Hi Melinda,

We do need ritual. I like the ritual sans religion. Something has happened to me, and I've dropped that part of my thinking. So we do bunnies and chocolate. Thanks for the good wishes and the funny link.
Maybe I will wait on that until Sam has finished his exams.

You are wonderful. Have a great week too.

  10. Hi Edgar,

I wish you and Melinda could visit and we could talk about art until the wee hours. Thanks for the kind compliments on my rushed drawing. There we were at close to 2 in the morning, and I needed something for the blog. Sam has always been a pretty willing model. Thank goodness.
Most of my work is pretty large -- hard to see scale in blogland.

But Edgar, I want to go larger. Really really large. Ah well.

    Take care,

    Barbara

  11. Hi Le San,

Happy Easter to you! I was reading your post on the meanie dentist. Love the video. I've been to that meanie dentist. Does he pop up everywhere like a nightmare?

    Take care,

  12. Hi Linny,

Thanks so much. Love the lavender house. I love the colour, but I'm sadly allergic to the smell.

Ah well. It makes me sneeze and my eyes water. But I am far from allergic to your fantastic painting. It is just gorgeous, exuberant, joyous beyond compare.

    Take care,

    Barbara
