Taking it easy

We are coming up to Canada Day. Canadians
are not as patriotic as Americans, but we do
love a day off. So we will all be heading to
cottages, and getting out the barbecue, hoping
to go swimming because it's a national holiday.
My big plan is to settle in with my novel,
then maybe go for a walk with Steven and our
dog Zoey, then have a super supper. I just got home
from dinner and a movie, and already feel in
the holiday mood.

Here's a little interior painting from my
sister's collection that certainly sets the tone for
what I hope to be doing on the nation's day.
I will curl up with a good book and my cats and
play hooky on the rest of my life.

Have a wonderful Canada Day!

From Texas - Happy Canada Day to you!!

  2. Don't let us Americans fool you, we love a day off too (I think we could do with a little less "patriotism" anyway--seems to get us into trouble!).
I love interiors too--a subject I've never tackled!--and this one's lovely; the surface seems to have a shimmery quality.

  4. This painting is so warm and inviting!

You're on to something with the Book & Bed idea. I think I'll double up on holidays by taking it easy on both Canada Day and July 4th :)

  5. Hi Linda,

Thanks so much. Happy Canada Day to you in Texas. I am thinking about Texas a lot today, wishing my Texas friends a great day.

    Take care,

  6. Hi Laura,

When I painted on watercolour paper I used to glaze the painting. I sometimes glaze my commissions too because it protects the canvas. It does give work a shimmery quality.

I can't help loving how Martha Stewart encourages people to decorate for the 4th of July. In Nova Scotia people go wild for Canada Day, and in the small town near our school house every lawn has dozens of flags, people crochet flags and hang them in the window, there are parades. I really love that spirit, that love of the land.

    Take care,

    Barbara

  7. Hi Eldon,

Playing hooky is good for an artist. If I ever write a manifesto like Marina Abramovic, I'll include that advice. It's good for everyone else too, which is why it's lovely to have a long, long weekend.

    Take care,

    Barbara

  8. Hi Gwen,

This cherry tree in the backyard is so demanding that I ended up picking cherries, then Sam and I made a cherry crumble that's in the oven right now! Yum. So I haven't exactly been reading. Happy Canada Day and Happy July 4th to you. Tomorrow is my son's birthday -- the joint is jumping.
